Game of 2008
As the year of 2008 comes to a close, it's good to have a look back at all of the games that have been released throughout the year and to decide on which one is the best of 2008.
Throughout the whole year there have been some awesome video game releases on the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, but in my opinion, the later half of the year would have to be the best. Between September and November there were some awesome game releases, dozens infact, and they have kept me and millions of other gamers entertained this year.
Here are just a few of the awesome games that have been released in the past year:
Lost Odyssey - I thought this game was pretty good, although the combat of the game was not my favorite it was still good gameplay, but also, extremely long, 4 disks, really took some time to get through it all.
Condemned 2 - Although the game is rather brutal and not for the feint of heart, the hand to hand combat makes the game really good. The game can get rather tense at times which really brings you into the game.
Battlefield: Bad Company - This is my personal favorite Battlefield game so far, mainly because it has a campaign. I thought the ability blow up a hole in a building was awesome, you could run any direction at a building and make your very own door.
Lego Indiance Jones - I am a great fan of every Lego game, they are fun to play, especially as a group. Even though the Lego games are short, the humour and gameplay to them is brilliant.
Lego Batman - Basically the same as Lego Indiana, but still an awesome game, this one featured some new things never seen before in other Lego games. Every one of the Lego games have been great fun to play and they are all fun for the whole family.
Civilization Revolution - I only played this game a few times on the Xbox 360 but I thought it was brilliant, alot different from any other Civilization game I've played.
Devil May Cry 4 - I know of alot of people that have said that this game is great, but I don't really see it. I played the demo on the Xbox 360 and thought, "hmm, alot of jumping". I thought the game was pretty repetitive, not my favorite game really.
Mario Kart Wii - Although I am not a great fan of the Mario games, I did like this one. Especially when you use the Wii steering wheel, the game is alot of fun, whether you are in a group or not.
GRID - I didn't like this game at all, I though the ability to rewind time if you crashed was silly, although the graphics were good, it was still a silly game.
Burnout Paradise - The only problem with this game is that it's repetitive, you do alot of races and then get a new license, once you get that license you have to repeat all of the races again, just a little bit harder to get another license. Although the game was great for a drive around, the whole campaign got slightly tiresome after a while.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Even though I have only played this game a few times, it was immense fun when I played it. The basic controls and fast paced gameplay makes it really fun to play as a party. The ability to jump around as Pikachu is great and rather funny.
Metal Gear Solid 4 - Although this game has alot of cut scenes, which can be rather lengthy, the bit where you get to play are brilliant, I thought the graphics were top notch and the story line great, when you got to play it that is.
Rock Band - Brilliant, I have always loved the Guitar Hero games, but when this was released I just had to get it, I loved the set list and loved the new instruments, awesome game and a must play for any music game lover.
Rock Band 2 - This game is brilliant, although it;s basically the same as Rock Band 1, it comes with a wider and more expanable set list, awesome to play and great fun in a group.
Guitar Hero World Tour - This game, like with Rock Band is a awesome game, the new instruments were great but I thought the set list really pulled it down, it depends on your taste but I wasn't amazed by it.
Grand Theft Auto 4 - You can't really complain about this game, all of the other GTA's have been outstanding but this one just topped the lot. Outstanding graphics and the ability to change the way the game ends depending on the choices you make just makes it even better. Plus with the addition of new content coming next year, the game just gets deeper and better.
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - Only World of Warcraft players will want to read this one, but this game is rather good, a new level cap plus new raid content, new land to explore and a new class. This game will keep me busy for many following months.
Gears of War 2 - Outstanding, just that one word needed really. The grpahics of the game were outstanding and the storyline was just amazing, it was full of action and non stop shooting. This game is a must own for any Xbox 360 and FPS lover, I look forward to getting the next one.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - There was a lot of hype about this game but I personally was not majorly impressed. The whole gameplay and look of the game was brilliant but the length of the stroyline and with no online play, the game was over with a few days, now it just sits on the shelf.
Left 4 Dead - If you were a fan of games like Half Life and Counter Strike, you'll love Left 4 Dead, it's made by the same people but this time it's got zombies. You and 3 other team mates have to battle your way out of the city. I really like the emphasis on team work all through out the game, plus all of the weapons are really realistic.
Fable 2 - In one way Fable 2 was great in another it was ok. The storyline, new graphics and ability to change the whole game by making one decision is awesome. But the length and difficulty of the game was a let down, I found it to be alot shorter than the original Fable and it was also alot easier as you didn't seem to face any major bosses. Although it has some downsides, It's still a great game to play.
Mirror's Edge - Some people might think that this game is poor, but I don't, I thought it was brilliant, just like Assassins Creed, which I loved. I thought Mirror's Edge was a amazing game, the graphics of the game were fantastic, although the cut scenes were rubbish, they looked rather cheap comic book stuff, the gameplay was oustanding and it's just a whole new style of game.
Far Cry 2 - There is one major problem with this game, once you start to play, you can't stop for several hours. The whole storyline and ability to change the game as you play is great, plus having to battle with malaria, brings a whole new dimension to the game. You have a great range of weapons plus some of the features that make the game more challanging is great. All these things made it an awesome game, one of the best of 2008.
Call of Duty 5: World of War - This game had a lot to live up to, I don't think it quite achieved that. I wasn't as entertained as it went back to the World Wars instead of staying with modern combat. But that aside, the gameplay and graphics were great, although it didn't quite live up to the reputation left by CoD4.
All of the games above were awesome and real fun to play, but now it comes the time to choose which game I personally think is the game of 2008, it's truely difficult. I would personally have to choose between Rock Band and Gears of War 2 and because of the amazing fight scenes and outstanding graphics and storyline, I would have to choose Gears of War 2 as my game of 2008. What's your game of the year?

Like they said, no monthly costs. You need a program called Steam so you can play online, but that comes with the product. Also, you might want to consider buying the pack which comes with CS Source, Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, and DOD Source (a World War 2 version of CS). It is a really good deal and they're all supported by Steam.
